Preparing Your Pipes for Winter: Essential Steps to Prevent Freezing

Winter brings beautiful frost and snow to Newcastle, but it also brings a significant risk to your home's plumbing. Frozen pipes are one of the most common and costly winter emergencies, potentially causing thousands of pounds in damage. The good news is that with proper preparation, you can prevent this problem entirely.
Why Pipes Freeze
Water expands as it freezes, creating pressure inside your pipes. This pressure can crack or burst the pipe, leading to water leaks that may go unnoticed until significant damage has occurred. Pipes most at risk are those in unheated areas like lofts, basements, garages, and external walls.
Insulation is Key
The most effective way to prevent frozen pipes is proper insulation. Pipe insulation foam, available from any DIY shop, is inexpensive and easy to install. Simply wrap it around exposed pipes, paying special attention to pipes in unheated areas. Secure it with tape or clips.
For pipes in your loft, ensure adequate loft insulation exists. Modern building standards recommend 270mm of insulation, which also helps keep your home warmer and reduces heating bills. If your loft insulation is thin, top it up before winter arrives.
Practical Prevention Measures
- Keep cabinet doors under sinks open to allow warm air to circulate around pipes
- Drip taps slightly on extremely cold nights – moving water is less likely to freeze
- Seal any gaps or cracks in external walls where pipes pass through
- Leave heating on low throughout the day, even when you're out
- Keep garage doors closed if pipes run through them
- Drain external taps and remove hoses before winter
If Pipes Do Freeze
If you suspect a frozen pipe, don't panic. Turn off your water supply at the main stopcock immediately. Locate the frozen section and apply gentle heat using a hot water bottle, heating pad, or hair dryer. Never use a blowtorch or open flame, as this is dangerous.
If you can't locate the frozen section or thawing doesn't work, contact a professional plumber. They have specialist equipment to safely thaw pipes without causing damage.
Emergency Preparedness
Know where your main water stopcock is located before winter arrives. In an emergency, you may need to shut off water quickly to prevent flooding. It's usually located under the kitchen sink or in a cupboard near your front door.
Taking these precautions now will protect your home and give you peace of mind throughout the winter months.
